Ssd data transfer

XPS 15 9570

XPS 15 9570

Hi, I managed to spill some liquid onto my xps 15 9570 machine. I’m currently leaving it a few days before trying to restart but my guess is that It will probably need replacing - my question is about how to transfer data off the old ssd. I’m not completely sure from the product spec whether it is pcie nvme or sata but I gather it would basically need an adapter in either case?

It would be an NVMe SSD.  Since you can not power on your laptop, it will be safer to remove the SSD and put it inside an enclosure.  Then you can connect it to a working computer/laptop for data retrieval.

@Chino de Oro Thanks, I think that was my assumption.

Glad to help out.  A couple things to note, you need a T5 bit + Phillip to remove the laptop base .  When shopping for the enclosure, certain product makes claim that it can be used for both types of NVMe and SATA SSD.  Select it can be a good investment for future usages.

Thanks. Looking at the detail, my only worry is the point a lot of them make about formatting / partitioning new disks - I assume this is an optional step given that the ssd drive will already have data on it?

You are correct.  Formatting and partitioning are the preparation steps for creating new drive.

Try not to allow the host computer to make change to your SSD while accessing the Users folder (default location of your data).
